Guide For "Sound-Alike" RecordingsUpdated a year ago

A "sound-alike" recording is designed to mimic a popular track so closely that the average listener could mistake it for the original. JumpWave Group will not distribute sound-alike content.

What is a Sound-Alike Recording?

Sound-alike recordings are often created as imitation versions of well-known songs, trending artists, or popular music styles. These versions can mislead audiences by imitating the original track and may even infringe on copyright.

Why We Don’t Distribute Sound-Alikes

If we can’t tell your track apart from the original, we can’t confirm that it doesn’t contain unlicensed audio. Distributing such content could lead to issues for listeners and potential copyright problems for you. We’re here to help you share your unique sound without risking platform removals due to rule violations.

How We Identify Sound-Alike Content

Our review team assesses whether your recording is unique by considering style, instrumentation, and vocals. We look for clear differences that distinguish it from the original track. Both vocals and instrumental elements are checked to ensure the whole recording feels original, not just the vocals.

Tempo and Key Changes

Simple changes to the tempo or key aren’t enough to prove that a track isn’t a sound-alike. Trends like sped-up or slowed-down versions require us to be more vigilant. However, we do allow creative tempo shifts or a switch from a major to a minor key if they contribute to a unique interpretation.

Distributing a sound-alike can lead to legal issues with the original rights holders, a common occurrence in the industry. For a safer and more rewarding approach, focus on bringing your own twist to any covers or inspired work. This helps you avoid copyright issues and strengthens your connection with fans who appreciate your unique style.
